Samsung Washer 5C Error: What It Means and How to Fix It
A Samsung washer that stops with water in the drum and shows 5C — or 5E on older models, sometimes read as 'SE' — is telling you it cannot drain. On the segment display the digit 5 looks like the letter S, so the same code is also widely read and searched as 'SC' — it is one and the same fault. The cycle pauses, the door stays locked, and the load sits in grey water. Work through the drain path in order before you assume the worst.
What to check, in order:
- The drain pump filter (front-load models). Unplug the washer. The filter is behind the small door at the bottom right of the front panel. Drain the water first through the small hose into a shallow pan, then unscrew the filter cap and clean the filter. This one step clears the code more often than any other.
- The drain hose and standpipe. A kinked hose, a hose pushed too deep into the standpipe, or a clogged standpipe will all trigger 5C. Straighten, reseat, and confirm the drain itself is clear.
- The pump impeller. Through the filter opening you can see and turn the impeller. A jammed impeller — coin, screw, bra strap wire — stops draining cold. Remove the object, refit the filter, and test Drain & Spin.
- The pump itself. If the filter and hose are clear and the pump is silent during Drain & Spin, the pump motor has failed. If it hums loudly without moving water, the blockage is deeper or the impeller is damaged.
Top-load note: Samsung top-load washers have no user-accessible drain filter. On a top-load 5C, check the hose first; beyond that, the pump is reached from underneath or behind the machine — that is Yellow work, not a five-minute check.
Verdict:
- Green — do it yourself: filter cleaning (front-load) and hose checks.
- Yellow — possible with tools and care: drain pump replacement; on many Samsung models the pump comes as a pump-and-motor assembly, so match the part to the full model number.
- Red — call a pro: 5C returns after a pump swap, the washer trips the breaker, or you see leak damage under the machine.
